Slow and expensive clinical negligence claims process affecting doctors’ mental health

A report from the Medical Protection Society (MPS) has found that clinical negligence claims in Ireland take an average of more than four years to resolve, which is longer than in other countries. This slow process is taking a toll on the mental wellbeing of both patients and doctors, as well as leading to high legal costs. The study found that doctors in Ireland facing clinical negligence claims are experiencing anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts, while patients describe the process as “excruciating.” The delays are attributed to a lack of mechanisms for early resolution, and the report calls for reform to improve the situation.
