Stacey Collins, a registered IBD dietitian, emphasized the importance of working with dietitians who specialize in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and their role on a patient’s care team in a Healio video exclusive. She mentioned that over 65% of patients report that food affects their symptoms severely, yet 69% have never received nutrition information about their diet in relation to their IBD diagnosis. Collins advised practices to understand the distinction between nutritionists and dietitians, ensure candidates are licensed, and look for candidates with an interest in IBD and experience as part of an IBD care team. She also highlighted the need for specialized dietitians in caring for IBD patients. The information was presented at the Crohn’s & Colitis Congress in Las Vegas. No relevant financial disclosures were reported by Collins.
