A research letter in JAMA Internal Medicine reports that an estimated 64,565 pregnancies resulting from rape have occurred in 14 US states with total bans on abortion. The study suggests that rape survivors in these states have limited access to legal abortions, leading to many seeking self-managed abortions or having to travel long distances to states where abortion is legal. Following the US Supreme Court decision in June 2022, nearly half of states have imposed restrictions on abortion. The authors argue that rape exceptions to abortion bans fail to provide reasonable access to abortion for survivors, leaving many with no practical alternative but to carry the pregnancy to term.
