Gene therapy has shown promising results in restoring hearing loss in an 11-year-old boy with profound hearing loss due to genetic mutations. The therapy, called AK-OTOF, was developed by pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly, which gained it through the acquisition of developer Akouos. The therapy uses a gene delivery system similar to those used in eye disorders and has shown early success in restoring hearing in the patient. The results are encouraging and show potential for treating hearing loss caused by genetic mutations. Other pharmaceutical companies are also working on gene therapy for hearing loss, with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals showing positive results in its clinical trial.
