Maternal cannabis use during pregnancy has been found to be associated with adverse outcomes related to placental dysfunction, according to a study published in JAMA. The study included 9,257 participants and found that 6.6% were exposed to cannabis during pregnancy. Overall, cannabis exposure at any time during pregnancy was associated with adverse outcomes related to placental function. However, cannabis use during the first trimester only was not associated with these outcomes. The study emphasized the importance of avoiding cannabis use during pregnancy to optimize maternal and neonatal outcomes. Limitations of the study included long storage delay times of urine samples and a lack of data on the mode and reason for cannabis use.
