Clinician-scientists from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago were part of a diverse group tasked with developing new data-based criteria for pediatric sepsis by the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). The Phoenix criteria follow a paradigm shift to define sepsis as a severe response to an infection involving organ dysfunction, rather than focusing on systemic inflammation. They are based on data from electronic health records and the analysis of over 3 million pediatric health care encounters worldwide. The new criteria are better at identifying children with infections at a higher risk of poor outcomes. The studies were published in JAMA on January 21, 2024, and presented at the SCCM Critical Care Congress in Phoenix, Arizona.
