A recent study from the Nurses’ Health Study suggests that intake of protein, especially from plants, in middle age is associated with higher odds of healthy aging and positive mental and physical health status in older women. Plant proteins have significant health benefits and contribute to healthier diets, while animal protein intake has been linked to an increased risk of premature death from chronic diseases. While it is important to note that the study does not yield causation, the findings emphasize the health advantages of consuming adequate dietary protein, particularly plant protein, in midlife to pursue a healthy lifestyle. The study, funded by the USDA Agricultural Research Service and the National Institutes of Health, supports the importance of assessing and counseling patients on nutrition at all stages of life.
