Between 20% and 56% of international travelers from high-income countries are at risk for travelers’ diarrhea during trips to tropical or subtropical destinations lasting less than 100 days. Pre-travel medical consultations can help reduce the severity and frequency of the condition. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 cohort studies found a pooled incidence of travelers’ diarrhea among adult international travelers to be 36.1%, with a prediction interval of 20.3% to 55.8%. Longer travel periods and data collection were associated with higher incidence rates. Travel medicine professionals can use this updated information to manage the risk of travelers’ diarrhea effectively.
