Physical activity may delay cognitive decline and improve executive function, memory, and verbal fluency in older adults, according to a meta-analysis published in JAMA Network Open. The study reviewed 104 studies involving over 340,000 participants to evaluate the relationship between physical activity and cognitive outcomes. Results showed that physical activity was associated with a decreased risk of cognitive decline and improved global cognition, executive function, memory, and verbal fluency. However, the association was considered weak but still significant from a public health perspective. Limitations of the study included variations in study quality and follow-up times, as well as a lack of analysis on the impact of different types of physical activity on cognitive outcomes.
