The World Health Organization (WHO) reported a sudden increase in cases over the past year, with the disease continuing to spread. Psittacosis is caused by a bacteria that commonly infects birds, but can also be transmitted to humans. Symptoms include fever, chills, headache, and dry cough. While most cases are mild, complications such as pneumonia can occur. Those at higher risk include bird owners, pet shop employees, and veterinarians. Preventative measures include proper hygiene, cleaning of bird cages, and using personal protective equipment.
