A new rapid test has been developed to diagnose melioidosis, a neglected tropical disease caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, faster and more accurately than current methods. The test, called CRISPR-BP34, has a sensitivity of 93 percent and can deliver results in less than four hours for certain samples. This advancement could save lives by allowing health professionals to prescribe the correct antibiotics sooner, reducing the number of deaths caused by delayed diagnosis. The test has the potential to be used globally and could significantly impact patient outcomes by saving time, resources, and ultimately, lives.
