Body dysmorphia, also known as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), is a mental health condition that causes excessive preoccupation with perceived flaws in one’s physical appearance, particularly affecting teens, especially girls. A new study has found BDD to be six times more prevalent in girls than boys, significantly impacting their quality of life. BDD often goes undetected and untreated in youth, as young people with the disorder may not disclose their symptoms unless asked directly. Screening tools are crucial in detecting BDD, as it often co-occurs with anxiety and depression, with around half of BDD sufferers experiencing self-harm or suicide attempts. Efforts are needed to raise awareness, improve screening practices, and reduce barriers to evidence-based treatment for BDD.
