Index Estimates Risk for Fall on Ice and Orthopedic Injury

admin

Researchers have developed a model to assess the risk of outdoor falls in snowy and icy winter conditions, called the Slip and Fall Index (SFI). The study found that ice and snow on the ground significantly predicted falls leading to increased ER presentations. Women presented more often for slip and falls compared to men, with the gender gap widening after age 50. The SFI could guide behavior related to fall risk, like avoiding outdoor activities in high-risk conditions. The index may be particularly useful for people with preexisting conditions. The study also highlighted the need for seasonal adjustment in orthopedic care and staffing in ERs.
