Increased breast pump market innovation, competition after Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) introduced policies to improve access to maternal health care, leading to a significant increase in breast pump premarket notifications and patents. This resulted in an increase in innovation and competition in the breast pump market. Data from 1994 to 2021 showed an increase in yearly mean number of premarket notifications and patents for breast pumps after the ACA policies were enacted in 2010. However, by 2020, the yearly mean number of patents had decreased. Overall, the study suggests that ACA policies have positively impacted the breast pump market by promoting innovation and competition.
