Hospital waiting list figures rise to 889,000

New figures show that over 889,000 people were on healthcare waiting lists at the end of February. The majority were waiting for outpatient consultations, inpatient treatments, or GI endoscopies. The Irish Hospital Consultants Association warned that without increased capacity, any action plan to address this issue may not be effective. The government has invested over €1.2 billion on waiting list initiatives since 2020 and is expected to announce a €407 million action plan for 2024. While waiting list figures decreased by 2.2% from last year, additions to the list were 6.6% higher. The HSE is analyzing the trend to determine its causes and potential solutions.
