Flexibility Advised for Patients With Personality Disorders

Dr. Mio Nakamura discussed the challenges of providing dermatologic care to patients with personality disorders at the American Academy of Dermatology annual meeting. Personality disorders, affecting up to 15% of the general population, can be difficult to treat and require flexibility. Nakamura shared her approach to caring for patients with borderline personality disorder, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder. She emphasized the importance of understanding the underlying psychological issues, providing tailored care, and avoiding unnecessary procedures. Nakamura recommended focusing on facts and knowledge for OCPD patients, engaging with NPD patients at a professional level, and avoiding rejection to prevent narcissistic injury.
