Manufacturer Perrigo has started shipping the pill to major retailers and pharmacies, with a monthly supply costing around $20 and a three-month supply about $50. Opill contains a single synthetic hormone, progestin, and is considered to have fewer side effects than combination estrogen and progestin pills. The launch provides U.S. women with another birth control option amidst ongoing legal battles over reproductive health. Despite concerns raised by FDA scientists, studies have shown that patients can effectively screen themselves to use Opill.
