These foods undergo industrial processes and contain additives like sugar, fat, and salt. They make up a significant portion of daily energy intake in high-income countries and have become more common in low and middle-income nations. The study, involving almost 10 million participants, found strong associations between ultra-processed food consumption and negative health outcomes. Urgent public health measures are recommended to reduce consumption of these foods and improve overall population health.
