Consuming artificially sweetened beverages increases the risk of atrial fibrillation, a heart condition with serious consequences. A study found that drinking two or more liters of these drinks a week raises the risk by 20%. The study also found that consuming pure fruit juice is associated with a lower risk of AFib, while those who drink both sugary and pure juice have a higher intake of total sugar. Other factors such as gender, age, BMI, and smoking status also play a role in the risk of developing AFib. The researchers recommend reducing or avoiding sweetened beverages to lower the risk of this heart condition.
