An NHS trust in Devon has been urged to recruit more obstetric consultants after an inspection by the Care Quality Commission found a shortage of experienced doctors in its maternity service. Torbay Hospital’s maternity services were rated as needing improvement, with the report highlighting a lack of obstetric medical staff and a risk of avoidable harm to mothers and babies. The inspection was part of a national maternity inspection program, and the trust has been asked to consider hiring an additional four consultants to ensure the safety of women and babies. The trust has stated that they are considering this requirement.
