A study published in Gut found that serum ferritin levels may help predict the long-term prognosis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The study, conducted at multiple sites, showed that patients with high serum ferritin levels were at higher risk for extrahepatic cancer, liver-related events, hepatocellular carcinoma, and mortality compared to those with normal-low serum ferritin levels. Combining serum ferritin levels with other noninvasive scoring systems improved predictive performance for liver-related events and overall mortality. The study authors recommend considering ferritin levels as an additional tool in risk stratification for patients with MASLD. Further validation in prospective cohort studies is needed.
