Purdue Pharma’s “predatory and deceptive” advertiser Publicis pays $350m to US states

Publicis Groupe, an advertising firm that worked with opioid maker Purdue Pharma, will pay a $350 million settlement to all 50 US states. This is to resolve allegations of using deceptive marketing to increase doctors’ opioid prescriptions. The settlement is the first of its kind to hold an advertising company accountable for its role in the US opioid epidemic. Publicis has agreed to permanently stop marketing opioids and pay the full amount within 60 days. The money will be used for addiction treatment programs and overdose prevention efforts. Publicis, now the world’s largest advertising holding company, was accused of creating marketing materials that promoted high-dose opioids.
