A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are up to eight times more likely to attempt suicide compared to those without the disorder. This highlights the need for mental health screening in patients with PCOS. The study included nearly 19,000 women with PCOS and 189,600 without, finding that PCOS greatly increased the risk of suicide attempt, with adolescents having over five times the risk. This points to the importance of clinicians asking PCOS patients about suicide risk and mental health. The study was funded by grants and the authors report no relevant financial relationships.
