The health service in Scotland has seen an increase in doctors, nurses, and funding post pandemic, but is treating significantly fewer patients, according to the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS). The IFS warns that if the issue of poor productivity is not addressed, the people of Scotland could experience declining healthcare services. NHS spending in Scotland has increased by 10% in 2022-23 compared to pre-pandemic levels, and the NHS has employed more consultants, junior doctors, and nurses. However, patient treatment numbers for day cases, emergency admissions, and outpatient visits have all decreased by 8% compared to pre-pandemic levels. Elective in-patient admissions have also seen a decline.
