A survey conducted by the Irish Hospice Foundation found that during the pandemic, 54% of people experienced the death of someone close to them, with 7 in 10 saying that family and friends were excluded from funerals due to public health restrictions. Over half felt that their loved ones received the care they needed at end of life, but 64% said their ability to grieve was negatively affected by Covid-related constraints. The survey also revealed increased awareness of grief, more thought given to end-of-life wishes, and alternative ways in the community to honor those who died. The charity made recommendations for continuous training for healthcare staff, greater investment in bereavement support services, and prioritizing compassionate end-of-life care with family involvement in the event of future public health emergencies.
