The risk for ipsilateral periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) within 5 years of the index infection in patients with total hip or knee arthroplasty is low, with only 1% to 2% of patients experiencing this complication. No ipsilateral infections occurred within 1 year of the index infection. These findings were presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting by Matthew P. Abdel, MD, FAAOS, of Mayo Clinic. This data can be helpful for clinical practice, especially for arthroplasty patients with multiple joint replacements where ipsilateral joint contamination can be a concern.
