Impaired Lung Function Risk Greater in Adolescents With More Abdominal Fat

Increased levels of subcutaneous and visceral fat at age 13 are linked to reduced lung function in adolescents, regardless of their body mass index at age 10. The study included 2877 children and found that higher fat levels were associated with lower lung function measures. No impact on asthma was observed. Reduction in these fat levels may improve respiratory health in adolescents. The study emphasizes the importance of addressing abdominal fat mass in improving lung function during adolescence. Limitations included potential biases and small to moderate effect sizes. Overall, reducing abdominal fat in adolescents could be a beneficial strategy for respiratory health.
