Tennessee researchers confirm the 2500-year-old advice to “let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” as lowering salt intake has been found to reduce blood pressure in older adults. A study involved 213 participants aged 50 to 75, including individuals with both normal blood pressure and hypertension, and found that after following a low-sodium diet for one week, participants’ blood pressure decreased significantly. The effect of salt on blood pressure was studied by measuring individual response to salt through alternating high and low-sodium diets. While the study has limitations, it highlights the benefits of reducing salt intake for adults between 50 and 75.
