A high-quality diet during infancy has been found to reduce the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) later in life. The researchers recommend incorporating plenty of fish and vegetables in an infant’s diet while minimizing the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks. Children who had a higher intake of vegetables, fruit, and fish, and a lower intake of meat, sweets, snacks, and drinks were found to have a lower risk of developing IBD. However, the study did not find any associations with other food groups. The study also suggests that early-life diet may affect the risk of IBD through changes in the gut microbiome.
