Two new studies by UCL researchers reveal that almost half of teenagers are concerned about having children and lack knowledge about reproductive health. Published in the Human Fertility and Health Education Journal, the studies surveyed 931 students in England aged 16 to 18. They found that while most students want children in the future, 45% of them expressed concerns about future parenthood. Some were influenced by fears about climate change and health issues, while others felt that the sex education they received at school was not inclusive. There were significant gaps in students’ education about reproductive issues like endometriosis, infertility, and the impact of lifestyle on fertility. Students want more inclusive and relevant education with transparent and non-judgmental teaching. The researchers hope that their study will contribute to improvements in sex and reproductive health education for students in England.
