A study presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting compared health care utilization rates and reoperation rates in patients over 65 years old who underwent osteosynthesis versus arthroplasty for femoral neck fractures. The study found that the arthroplasty group had slightly higher 90-day health care utilization rates, but the osteosynthesis group had almost double the reoperation rate. This led the researchers to question if more arthroplasty should be performed in this age group. The results were presented by Nicolas S. Piuzzi, MD, director of research for the Cleveland Clinic Adult Reconstruction Research Group.
