Steven Garner, and his brother Glenn, were sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of a man. While in prison, Garner joined the nation’s first prison hospice program at Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola. He cared for dying inmates for 25 years and collaborated with the prison warden to create a self-sufficient program where inmates made and sold quilts to fund burial costs and help families visit. After 31 years in prison, Garner and his brother were released in 2021. Garner now consults with prisons to help implement hospice programs and continues to advocate for hospice care.
