Nina Beaty, a former smoker, was diagnosed with small-cell lung cancer after an unexpected finding in a low-dose CT scan in 2014. Despite the grim prognosis for metastatic small-cell lung cancer, she enrolled in a clinical trial, and after receiving immunotherapy treatment, she is now in remission. Emotions related to the diagnosis are difficult, but it is important to have hope, find ways to express emotions, embrace spirituality, and consider your legacy. Getting support from a trusted medical team and leaning on others is important. Beaty created the EmPat Project, a website with emojis for cancer patients to communicate how they are feeling.
