Cannabis legalisation to be debated today

admin

A group of Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) doctors are concerned about proposed legislation to legalize cannabis possession for personal use and remove the stigma of a criminal conviction for such offenses. The doctors argue that decriminalization, as recommended by the Citizens’ Assembly, would be a more suitable approach. They have written to government officials ahead of a debate on the Misuse of Drugs (Cannabis Regulation) Bill. The bill, introduced by People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny, aims to legalize possession of up to seven grams of cannabis. The doctors point out that cannabis use disorder affects 1.2% of the population in Ireland, and they support a health-led, decriminalized response to drug use.
