Can the Genetic Overlap of ADHD and Autism Guide Better Treatment?

admin

Research published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry indicates that ADHD and ASD share certain genetic variants and genes. Colocalization analyses found that 37.5% of ASD SNPs colocalized with ADHD SNPs, and 19.6% of ADHD SNPs colocalized with ASD SNPs. The study also identified 8 genes, including 2 novel ones, associated with both disorders. Mendelian randomization analysis showed a bidirectional association between the risk of ASD and ADHD. The researchers suggest that further investigation of shared and specific genetic factors could help identify new treatment targets for patients with ASD and ADHD. The study’s limitations include potential bias from sample overlap in controls.
