The American Heart Association (AHA) has issued a new presidential advisory highlighting the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, which encompasses obesity, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and cardiovascular disease risk. More than 90 million adults in the US have at least 3 risk factors for CKM syndrome. Prevention efforts and early life screening for risk factors are important. The advisory proposes a framework for staging CKM syndrome, making recommendations for each stage, and identifies risk-enhancing factors. A new risk calculator including CKM components will be introduced by the AHA. The call to action centers on addressing research gaps, improving social determinants of health, access to pharmacotherapies, and community support.
