Leonard Calabrese, DO, discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic could lead to a better understanding of the relationship between infection and autoimmunity at the Basic and Clinical Immunology for the Busy Clinician symposium. He highlighted the importance of an integrated immune response and the balance between effector mechanisms and regulatory forces. The pandemic has provided ample opportunity to understand immune responses, particularly in the rheumatology community. Calabrese discussed potential triggers of immune response, such as pathogen-associated molecular patterns and damage-associated molecular patterns, as well as the role of interferon in SARS-CoV-2 infection and autoimmunity. The positive and negative effects of interferon are currently being studied in this context.
