Lewis Morgenstern has decided to sign an advanced directive for driving when he turns 65, which indicates he will stop driving when his children ask him to. This decision comes after concerns about older adults driving with cognitive impairments. There is a lack of national standards for when people should stop driving as senior drivers have increased by 38% since 2012. Concerns arise from accidents and injuries due to age-related conditions that affect driving abilities. Different types of advanced directives exist to address driving safety for older adults with dementia or cognitive decline, and evaluations cost $420 and aren’t covered by Medicare.
