Transgender, non-binary, gender-diverse people more likely to have a long-term mental health condition, says study

A study from The Lancet Public Health journal found that transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse people in England are at a higher risk for developing long-term mental health conditions than cisgender individuals. The research combined data from the English GP Patient Survey and analyzed responses from over 1.5 million participants. The study found that approximately half of non-binary transgender individuals reported mental health conditions, compared to around one in six transgender men and women and cisgender non-binary individuals. The study also found that transgender and non-binary individuals were more likely to report unmet mental health needs during general practice appointments. The authors stress the need for improved healthcare support and communication for these groups.
