Lower trabecular bone scores (TBS) are linked to skeletal fragility in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. While dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is less predictive of fracture risk in CKD patients, TBS may be a better assessment tool. A systematic review and meta-analysis of studies published until July 2023 showed lower TBS values in non-dialysis CKD patients, dialysis patients, and kidney transplant recipients compared to control participants. Fracture risk was also associated with TBS among dialysis patients and kidney transplant recipients. However, the relationship was not significant in non-dialysis CKD patients after adjusting for other factors. The researchers suggest that TBS may be useful in assessing fracture risk in CKD patients.
