There’s a New Covid-19 Variant and Cases Are Ticking Up. What Do You Need to Know?

The winter season has brought an increase in respiratory illnesses, particularly with a sharp uptick in emergency room visits and hospitalizations for COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. A new COVID-19 variant, JN.1, is spreading rapidly, representing 39% to half of the cases. The updated vaccines, rapid tests, and medical treatments are effective against this variant. Hospitalizations for COVID-19 are increasing but are lower than last year’s tally. It is advised to stay home if experiencing symptoms, use at-home tests, and wear masks in public spaces. Vaccinations and masks can help reduce the risk of serious illness and long-term effects of COVID-19.
