Little Miss Muffet eating curds and whey may have been doing more than filling her tummy, as evidence suggests that the bacteria in yogurt, known as probiotics, can prevent and treat diarrhea and other intestinal ailments. Researchers believe that these beneficial bacteria help stave off stomach problems by crowding out invading organisms that cause illness. Lactobacillus GG, one of the most studied probiotics, has shown to significantly reduce the rate of diarrhea, particularly after a course of antibiotics. While most commercial yogurt is pasteurized, offering limited benefits, probiotic supplements containing specific strains of bacteria have been shown to have positive results in preventing and treating diarrhea.
