Taking Erectile Dysfunction Drugs With Common Chest Pain Medication May Lead To Early Death

A new study has found that people who use the drug phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5i) for erectile dysfunction along with nitrates, a medication for chest pain, are at higher risk of early death. Erectile dysfunction is a common condition in middle-aged and older men due to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other factors. The study evaluated 61,487 men who received nitrate prescriptions and found that combining PDE5i with nitrates is associated with a higher risk for all health outcomes compared to using nitrates alone. However, the findings may not apply to the general population. Dr. Glenn N. Levine recommended careful consideration before prescribing PDE5i to men receiving nitrate treatment.
