A new study found that the risk of aerosolized viruses contaminating bathroom surfaces during toilet flushing is not affected by whether the lid is up or down. The only way to minimize this risk is by regularly disinfecting the toilet. Researchers from the University of Arizona and Reckitt Benckiser conducted the study, which showed that closing the toilet lid does not prevent the spread of viral particles. The study, limited to household toilets, found that disinfecting the toilet significantly reduced the amount of virus found in the toilet. Therefore, regular disinfection of all restroom surfaces is recommended to prevent the spread of viruses.
