Sholto David, an unemployed scientist with a doctorate in cell and molecular biology, has been identifying manipulated images in research papers and posting them on a site called PubPeer. His findings have led to corrections and retractions of more than 2,000 papers. Working from a flat in Wales, David’s efforts have impacted the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, a prominent cancer research center. Many of his findings do not receive a response from the authors of the studies, but they have made a significant impact in the scientific community.
