Rural Hospitals Are Caught in an Aging-Infrastructure Conundrum

CEO Kevin Stansbury of the 64-year-old Lincoln Community Hospital in Hugo, Colorado, is facing a financial dilemma. The hospital needs to expand to offer hip replacements and shoulder surgeries, but a lack of funds and access to loans make it difficult. High costs and low payments from insurance make it challenging for small rural hospitals to complete necessary capital improvement projects. As a result, many older hospitals in rural areas are in need of improvement. However, rural hospitals like this do not have many resources for funding and financing. There are bills proposed at the state and federal level to provide assistance, but challenges persist for rural hospitals.
