Professor Geraldine McCarthy is a Consultant Rheumatologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin and Professor of Medicine at University College Dublin. She has led studies into the biological effects of calcium-containing crystals in degenerative joint disease, atherosclerosis, and breast cancer, and has received funding for her research from institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. She has a busy clinical practice at the Mater and Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospitals in Dublin and is involved in international collaborative research. Professor McCarthy was President of the Irish Society for Rheumatology for four years and recently received the designation of ‘ACR Master’ at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting. In a podcast, she pays tribute to her mentors and offers advice to young medical women about strategic career planning. She also discusses the practical management of gout.
