The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has found that 11 out of 12 prenatal supplements tested had at least one nutrient above or below the levels noted on the labels. The GAO recommends that Congress strengthens the FDA’s oversight of dietary supplements, which are now regulated not as drugs but as foods. The FDA does not have the authority to approve dietary supplements before they are sold but can restrict or recall products on the market if problems occur. Industry experts view the findings with concern while also advising pregnant individuals to talk to their health care provider before buying prenatal supplements.
