When Covid-19 hit, contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) played a crucial role in rapidly producing vaccines. As the pandemic wanes, opportunities for future pandemic preparedness are at risk. CDMOs are key partners in producing medications and vaccines, but vulnerabilities were exposed during the rapid scaling for Covid-19. Three critical steps are proposed to better prepare for the next pandemic: spearhead manufacturing innovations, develop new business models or financial support, and have a seat at the table in procurement alliances and distribution planning. CDMOs’ potential requires confronting real barriers and leveraging their strengths through partnerships to deliver life-saving tools swiftly and equitably during future public health crises. The time to lay that groundwork is now.
