In the early 1980s, a physician at the University of California Medical Center found himself at the forefront of the emerging AIDS crisis in San Francisco. The discovery of HIV as the cause of the epidemic led to the development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the 1990s, which significantly reduced morbidity and mortality associated with HIV. However, challenges such as poor adherence and drug resistance still persist. Stigma, mental health disorders, and high pill burden contribute to poor adherence. Innovative treatment options, including long-acting injectable ART, are being developed to address these barriers. While progress has been made, the ultimate goal remains finding a cure for HIV.
